Why stepping away from social media led to the most aligned visibility I’ve ever created.

It’s been about a year and half since I became inactive on Instagram.
It sounds like a big thing but there was quite literally no fanfare about it.
One day, I just closed the app and never opened it again.
In the months preceding that moment, I kind of went back and forth.
I’d take breaks. Come back… only to find myself taking extended periods away, again.
It’s only now looking back that I realize that I’d energetically switched off from social media long before I made the decision to step back.
Because as is often the case, it took my mind a while to catch up to how my energy had shifted and evolved.
Part of the ongoing back and forth, though, was because it took me a long time to even allow my brain to imagine what it would look like to keep the momentum going and actually reach more people with my business, without relying on the platform that largely helped shape it.
I’ve come to realize that that’s a big part of the initial work: it’s impossible to feel into new possibilities when you’re blocked in a way that doesn’t allow your brain to entertain anything different.
So I had to be present with that for a while, and allow myself to percolate and dream about how visibility could look different, and what transpired from those initial questions has evolved into the frameworks and operating systems that I live by and now teach inside of Life-First Business and alumni mastermind group, Traction.
I rebuilt my entire marketing ecosystem—one that doesn’t rely on daily content, constant visibility, or being online 24/7.
It’s the same system I now teach inside the program.
One that matches the depth of my work, what comes naturally to me, how I want to spend my time day to day, and probably even more importantly, a system that compounds, holds value and works for me while I rest.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
I’m a writer by trade, so I channel an immense amount of value into intentional thought pieces that speak directly to my people and sell what I offer with how I think, operate and lead.
I leverage SEO so that the intentionality I fuse into my writing has staying power, longevity and evergreen discovery.
I use Pinterest for search and to position myself in front of the people who are actively looking for the work I do.
Speaking comes naturally to me, so podcast interviews, conferences and opportunities that allow me to riff, channel and share in communities where people value depth is a big piece of the puzzle.
Here, less is more.
I don’t care to be everywhere, nor am I interested in showing up in spaces that want me for surface level tips, tricks and hacks.
I prioritize collaborating with peers who have audiences who are already questioning “the way it’s always been” and are ripe for conversations that go deeper.
I’d rather be on one podcast with a host that can facilitate the level of conversation that nourishes me, than appear on tons that go nowhere and leave me feeling depleted afterwards.
Last summer I stepped back from ads and now, instead of funding Meta, I’m investing in ad placements with other small businesses, businesses that I want my company dollars to support.
And finally, email is where I get to connect, forge deeper relationships, keep conversations going and make powerful invitations to go deeper inside of paid containers.
I do all of this on a 3-day work week.
None of it requires me to document every waking hour of my life, to constantly be on, reinventing the wheel, chasing or performing.
I’m rarely on my phone. I get to work at a natural pace. And my focus is on depth, not volume, which means I have time to devote to my work rather than existing on a permanent to-do-list treadmill.
I go deeper on the same handful of priorities each week and it’s… heavenly.
It’s what my nervous system needs.
It feels deeply supportive of my priorities in this season and it’s work that I actually look forward to sit down at my desk and invest time and energy into.
This is what so many of my students come to me ready to create.
They come looking for longevity.
They either want to move away from social media completely or want to give their marketing an upgrade and mature the way they’re approaching things so that platforms like Instagram are things they get to do, rather than being something their sales are contingent on.
Because as it turns out, you don’t need to market like an influencer.
You don’t need to post for the sake of being seen and keeping up.
But what you do need are a handful of quality touchpoints that do the heavy lifting for you.
An ecosystem that works together – and reinforces one another – and thoughtful attracts people and positions your work in a way that makes your services vital to the people that matter.
This is how you become findable, without going viral, and sell with the refinement and precision of your copy, not your energy.
And this is exactly what I guide you to build inside Life-First Business.
If any part of this has you nodding along—it’s probably because you’ve been circling a similar crossroads.
You’re not new to this. You’ve built a body of work you believe in. You’ve shown up, consistently. You’ve proven to yourself that you can do it the “usual” way—show up everywhere, create constantly, stay top of mind.
But lately? It’s been costing more than it gives back.
Not just in time or energy—but in how it feels in your body.
The tension before opening the app. The frustration of feeling like your best work disappears in 24 hours. The constant undercurrent of “I should be posting,” even on days when your creativity needs stillness, not stimulation.
You’ve tried to fix it by doing better. Being more consistent. Hiring help. Reworking the content plan.
Because that’s what you’ve been taught: that visibility is a volume game. That if it’s not working, it must be you.
But what if the system itself is the mismatch?
What if the problem isn’t that you’re just not good at this, but that this way of showing up simply doesn’t fit.
Instead of spending more time than you already have trying to fix your business, I really want to invite you to channel that energy into envisioning what a more aligned approach could look – and feel – like.
Because when you give yourself permission to stop trying to make something fit that isn’t working, it frees up mental capacity and the creativity to devote to come that gets you remembered, missed when you’re gone and sought after.
Because here’s what I know to be true: when the model of visibility doesn’t align with how you think, how you process, how you create… no amount of optimization will make it feel right.
And so growing in a different way requires cultivating the courage to make a change.
